Obesity




Obesity is a preventable and treatable disease. It is defined as body mass index (BMI)above 30. BMI is a ratio of weight to height. Obesity can potentially lead to other diseases including diabetes, hypertention, sleep apnea syndrome, gastric esophageal reflex disease, various cancers, depression and arthritis.

Improving life style by focusing on better nutrition and increased physical activity alone is indicated for BMI 25-30. Medications are indicated between BMI 27-30 with presence of complications of obesity or above BMI of 30. Weight reduction surgery is indicated above BMI of 35 with complication of obesity or above BMI of 40.
